When we first got Keji she was a green boat with an extended cabin. Her name was "Green Dolphin". Here are Sasha and me up on the cabin. The PG&E Power Plant is in the background.

Here atop the mast at 38', I'm checking the mainsail sheave and the shroud and backstay. It took quite a bit of tugging to pull myself up with the main halyard.

Here Green Dolphin is hauled out in the Moss Landing boatyard for inspection of her hull, keel and rudder. See the classic Thunderbird lines. She is 26 ft. from stem to stern with a 1500 lb. solid steel keel.

After sailing her on Monterey Bay for a year we decided to do a refit. Here, in Woodward's yard, we rebuilt the cabin, sanded, primed and painted the hull.

Ken, the Artist, is painting her new name on the port quarter. Kejimkujik is from a beautiful wilderness area of Nova Scotia where my dad once took me fishing. It is now a National Park.

Finally completed with new paint, rudder, rigging, safety lines, a reconditioned mast and boom and a rebuilt cabin, she is ready for the relaunch.

A view from the stern shows cabin doors and cockpit. The cabin hatch opens on hinges and support struts. The wells at the stern are for a 7HP outboard motor and storage.

After two months out of the harbor we were given a new slip in the smaller boat area. Here the new hand rails and stanchions can be seen on the blue decks.

Out for a sail on Monterey Bay on a beautiful afternoon with a light breeze. We are headed out to take a look at the visiting USS Cape Cod, anchored near Santa Cruz.

The Thunderbird logo and the US 16 atop the mainsail indicate the international class sailboat status of Keji. She was the 16th one built of more than 1250 in the SF Bay and So. Cal., Seattle and Vancouver, Canada areas.

Here Kate takes the helm as we sail once more out to sea from Moss Landing harbor. We sailed Keji for nine years before trading this great sport to the equestrian world.

Of course, sailing is not the only pleasure. Here I have two nice Salmon as reward for about four early morning hours fishing and a couple of hours solo afternoon sailing back home.

More pictures of Thunderbird Sailboats, on San Francisco Bay

On several occasions I had the pleasure of sailing with friends, in their Thunderbirds, on San Francisco Bay. Oops, it's me at the helm.

t02

Apple Pie, #830 was one of the first Thunderbirds in the Bay area with the hull and deck built of fiberglass. She was light and fast.

As the sun sets over the Pacific we are headed back up the Oakland Estuary to our home base at the Alameda Yacht Club.

Thunderbird #1096 makes a pretty picture with her spinnaker full in a light west wind.

t02

Here AP makes a bit of wake in a light breeze as she sails out on the Bay just offshore from SanFrancisco.

Thunderbird #807 has just passed under the SF/Oakland Bay bridge near Yerba Buena Island

In this picture we can see across San Francisco Bay toward the east with the skyline of Richmond and the East Bay Hills.

A temporary tie-up at a slip in the Oakland Estuary where we stopped for breakfast before heading out to the Bay for a days sailing.

This picture shows how the cabin roof opens to allow headroom and lots of fresh air in the cabin.

Here are a few pictures other sailboats - friends.

Just passing the Moss Landing Harbor north jetty is my sailing buddy Mike Reilly in "Cat's Paw", his Sastana 22. The Santana is a one design class sailboat built for sailing San Francisco Bay but has become popular up and down the California coast.

t02

Here, on "Cat's Paw", we are heading into Moss Landing after a day sailing on the gentle Monterey Bay breezes. With the spinnaker fulll we are cruising home at a cool 5 knots. The twin towers of the power plant are visable on the shoreline.

Here are four ships that I worked with during my twenty years at the State Marine Laboratories in Moss Landing. The RV Point Sur at 135 Ft., the RV Cayuse at 80 Ft., the FV Shana Rae at 50Ft. (contracted work), and the RV Ed Ricketts at 35Ft.
